“The Wagon” was registered in February 1962 and is one of the earliest vehicles that Land Rover authorised for Dormobile conversion by Martin Walters; the original Land Rover certificate has a notation of the Martin Walters build number.( See Dormobile Register )
There have been three previous owners and the vehicle’s paperwork shows the chain of ownership to myself in 2016. The original buff logbook is present along with a number of letters, a fuel ration book and Dormobile instructions for operating the Dormatic seats and elevating roof.
Internally the seats and fitting are all original and work as intended, there are two lap belts in the front and a curtain rail runs around the interior. The seats can be configured to make a seating/dining area, two single or a double bed and fold back to the side to create a large load space (the photographs show a wooden table but the original is back in place) In the roof space there are two pull out hammock beds. There is a leisure battery in the passenger seat box that is powers three discreet usb sockets and internal lights and two gas canisters fit under the driver’s seat. The canopy is original and has a few pinholes but no structural damage.
The original sink is in good condition and the cooker has two rings with a grill underneath. There is storage underneath the cooker unit and the centre seat box as well as the wardrobe.
There is a hand throttle, swan-necked map light, overdrive, period reversing lights and ACE number plates, a bespoke roof rack shaped to fit the spare wheel; and there’s also a warning light if you drive off with the roof elevated. There is about a metre of elephant hide material for any repairs down the line (from Under Cover Covers) and a set of period tinted sun visors (not fitted).
Externally the paintwork is original but the wheels have been powder-coated and I have fitted Rocky Mountain door tops. Work has been completed to replace both ‘C’ pillars, the radiator bottom has a ‘Welding Wood’ replacement panel and the engine has a replacement unleaded head and SU carb with K & N filter fitted by the previous owner. BlackPaw 4×4 replaced the timing chain in 2020. Both the chassis and bulkhead are in very good condition, all PO’s and myself have kept the vehicle garaged.
The current mileage is 117,670, I have added 25,000 during the past ten years of ownership, the engine runs quiet and smooth and the vehicle drive well, keeping up with motorway traffic and is a surprisingly usable motor caravan.
I am keen for a new owner to appreciate the history and uniqueness of The Wagon, it is the only Series 2 Dormobile left that has not been altered or modernised and I welcome any serious enquiries and viewings.
