Land Rover Series 2a, “Bob”
Meet Bob (think Blackadder): a Series 2a, though not entirely. With some research and the kind help of the Series 2a Club, here’s what she is:
- Verified Series 2a chassis
- Series 2 2.25 petrol engine
- Series 3 gearbox (honestly a blessing, with synchromesh on all forward gears)
- Series 3 front end, cab and bulkhead
I bought Bob a few years ago to scratch a long-standing itch to own and do up an old Land Rover. Having run a few Discovery 3s over the years, I searched for a while before finding this very good example. She’d already had a significant amount of restoration work before I got her (see photos via this link https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/c1nwizak2qqxodszasbnd/AJRAACy71mqildtRPFnDyQs?rlkey=3jwnnxnoj5gzgcmq69fuad4kz&st=rnk5m3f8&dl=0).
Since then I’ve done the following:
- Refurbished water pump
- New oil seals on diffs and transfer box
- New engine electrics throughout (plugs, leads, coil, distributor, points, etc.)
- Refurbished carb
- New shocks all round
- New battery
- New indicator stalk
- New fuel pump
- Plus the usual assortment of odds and sods, inc full oil changes in last few months (engine, diffs, gearbox, trans, and oil filter)
Spares included: original air filter, spare set of wheels, skirts, spare diff, a large stock of new seals and gaskets, oils, assorted other parts (see photos for an idea), and a set of original workshop manuals.
Bob isn’t a showroom piece, but she starts and drives very well, and the video should give you an idea of how smooth the engine is. She’s solid throughout, with nothing wrong in the bulkhead, and the chassis welding is well documented in the photos. There’s nothing that needs doing; just jump in and enjoy her, especially as she’s MOT and road tax exempt.
(one thing to do, if it bothers you, is reconnect the speedo cable to the speedo, it’s a new cable i fitted the other month, so i know it’s ok, and it was working ok, but i think i must not have pressed it on or locked it in place correctly to the back of the speedo, as the speedo has stopped working just the other day)
If I were keeping her, there’d always be another oil leak to chase down, and I’d thought about repainting the wheels and refitting the skirts. Like any Landy, there’s plenty you could do to make her your own. But as a usable project to enjoy right now, I’d say this is a very good one that is very solid.
I’ve been on eBay for many years with 100% feedback throughout. Please message me with any questions, and viewings are always welcome.
I’m open to sensible offers, though I know what a well put together Series is worth. It’s simply time to move her on for the next project.
Buyer collects. Payment by bank transfer before collection.
Note: the drivers seat has the extra lift cushion in place, as i’m fairly tall so just made it more comfortable… it can of course be easily removed…
